There is a documentary called “Hit So Hard” being worked on about former Hole drummer Patty Schemel and it has a lot of her old Hole footage from the 90′s. There also appears to be unseen footage of Kurt Cobain in the film, as in the trailer there appears to be a brief clip of him smiling. There are exclusive interviews with former Hole members Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, and Melissa auf der Maur in the documentary. The film is directed by P. David Ebersole

Hole’s classic (not quite original, but I didn’t know what else to put for the headline) lineup of Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, Melissa auf der Maur, and Patty Schemel will reunite on March 28th for the New York premiere of “Hit So Hard” the new documentary about Patty Schemel and Hole according to NME.com.

A new documentary (Hit So Hard) telling the story of former Hole drummer Patty Schemel features never-before-seen footage of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain singing an unreleased song they wrote.

Candid home footage recorded by Schemel of Cobain and Love, including footage of them playing ‘Stinking of You’, is featured in the film.

I attended a screening of the film last night at Lincoln Center in NYC. As someone who grew up a huge fan of both Nirvana and Hole this film is filled to the brim with “fanboy” moments. I was surprised how much the film focused on Kurt, and just how much home video footage was used. I didn’t realize how close he and Patty were, but his presence and death played a major role in both her life and the story of the band. As huge of a fan as I am, watching some of the footage was almost uncomfortable because it is not about Kurt the musician, it is about Kurt the friend, father and husband and it was all home video footage that seems like should be meant for Frances' eyes only.

There is footage of Kurt playing with Frances as a newborn in the mirror of what looks like a hotel room, Kurt playing with her in the closet of his bedroom, Kurt filming his sister Kim playing with Frances. There is some footage that I don't believe came from Patty. This is footage of Kurt’s last Christmas, he and Courtney in a bathtub with Frances just acting very sweet like two new young parents playing lovingly with their baby. One shot I found particularly sad was a shot when Kurt had the camera. It is of a very young (maybe less than a year old) Frances lying down. Courtney is heard saying something along the lines of "We are so glad you are here daddy. We thought you died tonight daddy” Courtney than leans in kissing Frances and looking like she had been in tears asking Kurt to "please not leave your girls daddy. Promise you won’t leave your girls." Kurt than makes a very dry joke about going for a pack of cigarettes. There is no time stamp but this could be from NYC when Kurt overdosed before the Roseland show in July 93. There is footage of what looks like a birthday party with Kurt eating cake, and Pat Smear blowing up balloons. The “Stinking of You” clip appears to be recorded by Kurt. Courtney is playing a very loose riff and singing the song, Kurt joins for the chorus. There is a small bit of footage Kurt Courtney and Frances playing in a room at pachyderm, someone calls Kurt and he says “I have to go to work now.”
There were some other small bits that I am forgetting, but definitely worth a watch even if you have CL and Hole.

The filmmakers, Patty and Eric Erlandson were on hand for a Q&A afterward. One thing of note from that was that one of the filmmakers thanked Eric for providing additional audio and video to Patty’s stuff. This led to a conversation on how they were both carrying around hi-8 cameras all through the early 90’s. Eric has audio tape of just about every Hole show, but both said how m much footage they have of Nirvana and other bands they toured with. Eric in particular said he has “hours of footage of Nirvana” from shows like Reading, and other shows, rehearsals etc.

I forgot that the filmmakers mentioned that they are shopping options to release it in theaters and than eventual dvd release. They said the original cut of the film was 4 hours and that they had a ton of stuff for dvd extras.
