On the new album you’re working on now, are you contributing more? Yeah, I’m definitely contributing more. With guitar bands, fans want to hear the guitarist’s ideas as a song. But the good thing about Soundgarden is that everybody in the band writes songs on guitar. The drummer Matt writes songs on guitar. He’s not introducing songs on drums or piano or anything. Even our bass player Ben: As opposed to introducing songs on bass, he primarily introduces songs on guitar. So I’m the guy that has to learn everybody’s guitar nuances and styles and play their songs. So regardless of whether it’s me or the other guys in the band, we are a guitar-based band. I am contributing more, but I think the good news is that everybody is contributing.
Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron stated in the new Soundgarden article in Rolling Stone Australia that the new Soundgarden album, “There’s some absolute classic heavy duty sludge-riff rock, with ear splitting vocals.” The album has a tentative 2nd quarter release date scheduled. The dynamics of the songwriting process were also revealed in the article:
-Chris Cornell brought in 6-7 songs
-Kim Thayil and Ben Shepherd wrote music for 4-5 tracks
-Matt Cameron wrote the music for 2 songs.
Cornell also stated that he feels the same about this album as all of the other Soundgarden albums, and that any feelings of insecurity and anxiety about the new album are popping up at the same times they did when he made the old ones.

Banana 101.5 is reporting that Soundgarden’s new album has 14 tracks. They didn’t cite a source or anything, so take it with a grain of salt. Knowing Soundgarden though the album will likely have 13-15 tracks.
As far as the sound of their sixth album — expect it to sound different, which is technically the same with Soundgarden. They’re a band whose sound changed drastically from album to album, but always contained unique combination of Cornell’s wide vocal range, Thayil’s unpredictable sonic assault, the odd time signatures hammered out by Matt Cameron, with Ben Shepherd somehow tying it all together. Thayil has said the record has some ‘Down on the Upside’-esque moments and told Stereogum of the 14 track collection
