1. All Secrets Known - Heavy as fuck. AIC is the band every modern hard rock band (Chevelle, Disturbed, etc) tries to be, but arent nearly as good.
2. Check My Brain - Awesome, heavy, deep groove. Dense vocal harmonies, inflection just like Layne. Depth.
3. Last Of My Kind - Power grooves, bass present throughout.
4. Your Decision - Acoustic. First time you can hear Duvalls voice upfront without all the layers of guitars and harmonies. Verse sounds like Keep on Rockin in the Free World. Multi-layer vocal harmony. very 90s guitar.
5. A Looking In View - God damn this song is heavy. Track 1-3 were also as heavy as this. This album is slow, groovy. Slow heavy as opposed to fast heavy. Sometimes slow is heavier than fast. Fade out no one really does fade-outs anymore.
6. When The Sun Rose Again - Another acoustic song. Is this the Layne song? Kinney bongos. Electric solo great — shoulda been longer.
7. Acid Bubble - Slowest yet — heavy. Not going for poppy choruses on this record, just good songs and emotion. Part 2 — fastest section on the record yet. Back to part 1. This song is epic. Back to part 2!
8. Lessons Learned - mid-paced rocker — most like old AIC so far. Duvalls voice really low, haunting. Pretty sweet chorus. Possible single.
9. Take Her Out - Big, slower, but arena-rocky. Major key chorus. Reminds me of Sea of Sorrow. Short but fitting solo. Song still kinda slow and plodding (in a good way).
10. Private Hell - Really slow but still loud. Distorted guitars. AIC are the Crowbar of alt-metal/rock. Gigantic sounding guitars on this whole record. Another ace solo Jerry not a guitar hero, just plays whats right.
11. Black Gives Way To Blue - Quiet. piano + guitar + vocals. Layne song? melancholy. I Remember You
Takiego gościa na nowym albumie Alice in Chains chyba nikt się nie spodziewał. W tytułowym nagraniu na krążku "Black Gives Way to Blue" pojawia się... Sir Elton John.
Anglika zaproponował kolega gitarzysty Jerry'ego Cantrella, gdy ten wspomniał, że w piosence przydałaby się partia fortepianu. Oczywiście muzyk początkowo potraktował to jako żart, ale po głębszym namyśle postanowił zaryzykować. - Uznałem, że warto spróbować i napisałem mu e-mail o tym, ile ten numer dla nas znaczy - wyznał Cantrell. - Napisałem, że to płynący prosto z serca utwór dla Layne'a.
Kiedy 62-latek usłyszał kompozycję z miejsca zgodził się na współpracę. - Elton zawsze miał na mnie wielki wpływ, jeśli chodzi pisanie piosenek.
Sesja odbyła się w Las Vegas. - Wspaniale było nagrywać z Alice In Chains - przekonuje John. W podobnym tonie wypowiada się Cantrell. - Całe to doświadczenie było magiczne - podsumowuje.
Longplay ukaże się 28 września. W zestawie łącznie znajdzie się 11 kompozycji.
Przypomnijmy, że grupa wznowiła działalność w 2005 roku. Layne Staley, oryginalny frontman, zmarł tragicznie w kwietniu 2002 roku. Ostatni longplay, jaki nagrał z kapelą to "Alice in Chains" z listopada 1995 roku.

Ostatnio przeglądałem nagrania z koncertów, tych nowych jak i tych starych. No i nie wiem, czy to jest kwestia tego, ze żyjemy po prostu w innych czasach, ale kiedys te koncerty były jakies takie inne, więcej w nich było takich prawdziwych emocji w połączeniu z takim sex,drugs&rock'n'roll, a teraz to tak bardziej na zasadzie, 'fajnie jest znów pograc sobie', no i tak jeszcze co do osoby samego duValla to troche ten jego imidż sceniczny mnie denerwuje, za dużo tam takiego 'gwiazdorstwa' w negatywnym znaczeniu tego słowa, no i jak zobaczyłem na jednym filmiku jak spiewa w rain when i die chórki z jerrym tak główka w głowke to myślalem ze mnie szlak trafi.
No, ale z drugiej strony jakbym był w Katowicach, to pewnie bym sie strasznie cieszył, ze moge usłyszec te kawałki i jakos mniej by mnie to denerwowało. No ale nie byłem, wiec mnie to denerwuje.

In one of the most bizarre team-ups in recent years, the grunge heavyweights have enlisted Sir Elton to tinkle the ivories on their comeback record
There are surely few stranger ways to pay tribute to Layne Staley, one of hard rock's late frontmen, than with a song sung by Elton John. And yet that's what Alice in Chains have done, getting Sir Elton to play on the band's comeback record.
The idea was first proposed by a friend of singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell. "I remember laughing and saying, 'Yeah, I'll get right on that,'" Cantrell said. "But I decided it was worth trying." As luck would have it, the glam balladeer turned out to be an "admirer" of Alice in Chains, and soon they were all together in a Las Vegas studio, recording the title track for Black Gives Way to Blue, with Sir Elton singing backing vocals and playing piano. "I was very flattered and couldn't resist," he said. "[It's] a beautiful song."
Black Gives Way to Blue is Alice in Chains' first album in more than a decade – and their first since Staley died in 2002. "It takes a big set of fucking balls — four sets of balls — to take on a challenge like this," Cantrell told Rolling Stone earlier this year. "We did it for the same reasons we made music before."
For the title track – "a real, raw, open-hearted song" – the band added a fifth set of balls – Sir Elton's. "He is a huge influence on me as a songwriter and having him on that song is an amazing honour for us," Cantrell said. "Walking into a studio and seeing the sheet music for that song on Elton's piano made it meaningful on so many different levels. The whole experience was pretty magical."
Unfortunately, Sir Elton will not be joining Alice in Chains on tour. Instead, the band will continue to work with new singer William DuVall. But "there is no fucking replacing [Layne]", Cantrell insisted.
Black Gives Way to Blue will be released on 29 September.
